A Done Deal

There are many ways to signal that an agreement has been reached—with a handshake, a formal signing, an exchange of gifts, or perhaps a ceremony. The Israelites ratified their covenant with God by assembling at Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal in central Canaan (Josh. 8:30–35).

Half the people stood in front of one hill and half in front of the other, while Joshua and the Levites reviewed the conditions of the Law. The people voiced their commitment to the terms by shouting, “Amen!” It must have been a spectacular sight—and an unforgettable experience.
