Isaiah 5:20-21
20Woe to those who call evil goodand good evil,who put darkness for lightand light for darkness,who put bitter for sweetand sweet for bitter.
"Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!" Read 5:20 with 5:21 in mind. People don't just *call* evil good, etc. -- that's how they may actually see it, in their own wisdom and prudence.

Romans 1:19-22
19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
"Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools." - So the question is, how did that happen when they had (and we have) such a blessing? The early Friends used "profess" as a derogatory term, with this and other passages in mind, and made much of the apostasy of the established 'churches.'
