Psalms 91:7-8
7A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
7A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
The Psalmist writes of a time of peril and trouble. Snares, pestilences, and great evil are seemingly running rampant upon all Earth’s inhabitants. With all of the wickedness and suffering surrounding the Psalmist, one would wonder why he would follow a so-called God Who claims to be a protector. The reader is quickly corrected, ‘Those who go to God Most High for safety will be protected by the Almighty.’ A bold claim for anyone, especially a stuttering Shepherd named Moses (Moses is believed to be the author of this Psalm). As Moses continues to write, the claims grow in magnitude. It eventually swells into the boldest of claims: At your side one thousand people may die, or even ten thousand right beside you, but you will not be hurt. Wow. The host of enemies who set you up at work. Those that curse you and your God. The terrorist that hijacked American planes. The wicked who planted anthrax in public places. The so called friends who get close to you just to know your secrets. All of the wicked. David relays the one word that God has in store for the enemies of Eternity’s King and the King’s children: failure. Every lie, every trap, every attempt will all be met by angels itching to slay demons in the Name of the King. On one side let thousands fail. Beside your right hand let liars be consumed. Be surrounded by failed attempts, Believer, but God promises one thing about you: you will not be hurt. They cannot take your job. They cannot break your marriage. They cannot claim your children. While they fail, you will sit at a God-prepared table in the presence of your enemies. What will you do while you eat? ‘Watch and see the wicked punished.’
