God's stated reason for destroying Gog is the same as His stated reason for saving Israel. That His name may be glorified, and that He may show His greatness among the nations. Again, what we're seeing is God's answer to the "great controversy" accusations of Satan.

It may seem a bit silly that God needs to vindicate His character. But the great conflict in the universe is between God and Satan specifically about God's character.
Some of the wonderful, amazing things God does for us is not for our benefit, but for the benefit of His holiness, His glory, His integrity, and His universal reputation - "for His name's sake"
