1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,Some later manuscripts Jesus, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit, We have been set free by Christ from slavery to sin through the gift of the Holy Spirit, and in this our minds have been renewed and our hearts have been sanctified for true service to God. We have also been freed from the external demands of the law so that we might live joyfully before God as we trust in Jesus's completed work on our behalf. These two things -- the inward witness of the Spirit (by which we now cry out to God: 'Father!' where we once had no assurance of His love) and the Father's visible acceptance of Jesus's obedience on our behalf (an acceptance displayed in His resurrection) are great sources of comfort and assurance that we are indeed children of God through our faith, freed from prior condemnation according to His infinite love and mercy.
