The stones, only one was needed but David had 5 a symbol of God's abundant grace. The fact that they were in the stream and having been washed by the stream to smoothness represents David having been tested. Notice he didn't take the sword and the things given to him by Saul because they were untested. David took the things that have been tested and perfected by the water. The washing of our lives should be in the same way by immersing ourselves in His presence through prayer, and worship.
