Matthew 17:20
20He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”Some manuscripts you. 21 But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.

Most of my life I have heard this verse taught as faith the size of a mustard seed. That is not possibly what Jesus is saying here because he is constantly reproving people for having little faith. The verse says faith "as" meaning "like" a grain of mustard seed. So to understand what Jesus is saying here we have to find out what a grain of mustard seed is like. Size is a part of it because Jesus in another place says a mustard seed starts off the smallest of seeds but when it is grown it becomes the largest of herbs so that the fowls of the air lodge in the branches of it. Additionally what all seeds act like is they don't have the building materials within themselves to make the tree that they're designed for, but what they have is the blueprint for the tree in themselves and when you plant and water them they reach into the earth around them and pull out the materials that they need. So what Jesus is saying here is that when take the seed of the word of god concerning the promise that you are after and plant it in your heart and meditate upon in until your faith reaches out into the earth around you and grabs the building materials you need to receive that promise then you can say to the mountain that has been standing between you and the promise to remove hence to yonder place and it shall obey you.
