John makes reference to two possible outcomes for the children of God. If they believe and are obedient, they will receive the Holy Ghost as a reward, and with it the earnest of thier eternal inheritance, which is life and salvation in this present world. If however, they choose not to be obedient, they will be chastened with fire. Keep in mind that God only chastens His children because those not chastened are bastards.
