Romans 8:38-39
38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,Or nor heavenly rulers neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,Or nor heavenly rulers neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
We who are in Christ have been chosen in love before all of creation, called in our own time by the Gospel of grace, justified forever by the word of the Lord through the blood of the Son's sacrifice, and have thus been received into God's family as heirs of eternal glory with Christ Jesus (vv.29-30). The Father has given a final, resounding answer to the problem of sin and death through the cross; more so, He also has given His glorious, everlasting presence to the newly-formed people of God who are brothers and sisters of the Risen Christ and share in His life as well as His death. Nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus, who "for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of God" (Hebrews 12:2). The joy that was set before Christ was the joy of seeking and saving the lost, the joy at bringing to the Father a people for His everlasting praise. God has spoken, and He has acted; even once more again He will act to bring all of creation and all of redeemed humanity to completion in Christ (vv.19-21). What can happen? Who can separate? As Paul says earlier in the chapter, "For God has done..." (v. 3)

Romans 8:27
27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.
27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.
Paul began this section talking about the incomparable glories that await those who suffer now for Jesus' sake, calling us to look not to the visible realm but to the invisible reality of our salvation. In our weakness, hope in Christ makes us strong (vv.23-25). This is not a one-sided hope or an act of wishful thinking, because of the Holy Spirit, who dwells in us -- who is the very down-payment of our redemption! Everything we need to equip us and prepare us for eternal life is given to us through the Holy Spirit. And so, as we abide in Christ through that same Spirit, Jesus also intercedes for us by that same Spirit, having become intimately familiar with our thoughts, feelings, and temptations because of His presence in our hearts (vv.26-27). On Jesus' role of intercession, see Isaiah 53:12 and Hebrews 7:23-25.

Romans 8:23
23Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
23Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
If the transition between the present age and the age of glory is likened to birth pains, Paul gives us no reason to believe that we who experience the first-fruits of God's Kingdom in our lives will attain to glory without going through the same process. What we await is an eternal weight of glory (see 2 Cor. 4:16-18) that we set our hope on as we groan with anticipation, endure suffering in patience, or persevere in faith through trial and temptation. It is the work of the Holy Spirit in us that makes us aware of our inheritance in Christ; we shouldn't be surprised to find that walking in the Spirit will cause us to yearn and groan increasingly as we become less and less satisfied with fleeting things and more and more satisfied in Christ.

Romans 8:19
19The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.
19The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.
Paul has in mind the complete plan of salvation from beginning to end -- from Fall to Glory. The creation has been awaiting its full redemption since Adam and Eve sinned and brought the curse upon not only humans but even the created order itself (Genesis 3:17-19). We are in the aftermath of Jesus's incarnation, death, resurrection, and the pouring out of the Holy Spirit upon believers--signs that God's kingdom has come and is coming to the earth. 'The old has passed away', and finally the new has come -- new life in the Spirit, a new hope in the resurrection of our bodies, and a new day of victory for the children of God who were captive to sin and will still experience death (unless the Lord comes before we die). The next few verses will show very clearly that the groaning of creation hasn't ceased, but rather become more pronounced as it awaits the completion of the redemption that started and will be completed upon Christ's return. The creation waits for the revealing of the children of God because it is only at the resurrection that God in His glory -- Jesus Christ our Lord -- will dwell among all created things, seated on the throne amidst the New Jerusalem (see Rev. 21).
