Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place
35Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Here is a perfect example of Jesus spiritual discipline. He does three important things in this single verse that are important for the Christian: 1. He rises early; 2. He goes to a solitary place; 3. He prays.
He exhibits three very important, as a writer at Scriptorium Daily (http://www.scriptoriumdaily.com) puts it, "spiritual discipline." In order to prepare himself for the task at hand later that morning, preaching to the people in the town they were traveling to, he takes time to 'exercise' that component of his nature that was to see the most use.
Since Christ functions not only as our Saviour, but also example, it is important to glean what knowledge we can from this brief verse. It stands to reason that 'taking up our cross and following him' would include the exercise of spiritual discipline as well.
