2 Samuel 11
Chapter 11
David and Bathsheba
1In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king's men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem.
David saw Bathsheba and lusted after her. He knew she was married, but sent for her anyway. After she became pregnant, everyone would know that she committed adultery, because her husband was at war. So, to cover up one sin David committed another. He ordered that her husband, Uriah be sent to the forefront of the battle. This way he would be killed. "But the thing David had done displeased the Lord". This story is a true depiction of what sin does. It doesn't stop. It makes us feel as if we have to take on a burden that we can't manage by trying to cover it up. In our eyes trying to cover up our sin is much easier than asking for forgiveness, because of the conviction in our heart. David's lust turned into to adultery, which led to premeditated murder. We need to take control of our sin and know that God is always willing to forgive us if we turn away from our sin. Psalms 51.
