What is his commandment? To love one another. Why? The same Spirit that was given to you, has been given to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. The Spirit is grieved if we fail to love one another, because the Spirit cannot be divided between 2 people that are against each other. The Spirit is one. The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit are one, and we must be in unity with one another to remain in the body of Christ. Love is the bond of unity. When we walk in love according to this scripture, then God will manifest himself to you.

Walking in love sometimes requires sacrifice. Jesus did it and it was like a sweet-smelling offering. The Word says that we can do all things through Christ which strengthens us. We can walk in love.

Before God created the earth, before God spoke man into existence, it was in the heart and mind of God that He would have a people who were blameless and holy. The only way to be blameless and holy is to have the love nature. God made that provision through Christ. He washed us with his Word and the Blood of Jesus, so that He could dwell in us. If God dwells in us then we can walk in love, because God is love.

34“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

Why a new commandment? Love God and your neighbor have been a command for a long time. The difference is, when Jesus said "as I have loved you" that made a difference. Jesus Showed compassion and care for his disciples, he taught them to pray for their enemies, to turn the other cheek, to forgive 70 X 7(and more if needed), Jesus washed the feet of his disciples(woe!), the disciples probably thought hard on that one, and many more examples of how Jesus loved them. That kind of love was new in this world.
