Acts 2:40-47
40With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”
My first impression on reading this was that this is incredible! A community that behaved as one unit. I thought of the ideals of communism and realised they essentially had the same vision. Communism failed only because there was no God, no higher purpose, no greater authority. Humanism, in all its guises and applications, while admirable, indeed desirable, will ultimately fail because of a fatal oversight - the failure to recognise that man is fundamentally flawed. We are self-centered creatures, and at best, finite beings with finite wisdom. We are flawed because we are incomplete. There is a free-rider in all of us, and when push comes to shove, we always take care of ourselves and our own. We lack His Holy Spirit which guides us into all wisdom, and which enables us to rise above ourselves as we reach for God. This utopia of a perfect, caring and loving community is only possible with God as the instigator, enabler and inspiration.
