Luke 3:7-14
7John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
From the way that Luke unfolds this story, it appears that people may have been coming to see John the Baptist out of a desire to appear righteous/holy. (Maybe going to see John the B. was the latest religious trend?) John seems to be warning them not to hide behind outward religious acts while also challenging them to “produce fruit” that is real. The examples of “fruit” that he gives are acts of self-denial and self-giving. It’s almost a foreshadowing of the kinds of things that Jesus would later teach in his sermon on the mount. Of course, John also pulls the carpet from underneath them when he essentially says, “Stop hiding behind your Jewishness and live rightly.” It's all very reminiscent of Isaiah 29.13-16.
