Hebrews 12:6-8
6because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.”Prov. 3:11,12
Those whom the Lord loves dearly, those who he finds pleasing, he trains, molding them into the image of Christ. And he scourges, metaphorically whips or lashes, every child that he adopts. The first word translated as “chasteneth” is the Greek word “paideuo”, having a range of serverity of the punishment that is carried out. The second word translated “scourgeth” is more precise and is used elsewhere to describe the beatings that both Christ and the Apostles suffered. This type of punishment is decribed often in the Old Tesament when God brought affliction and calamity upon the children of Israel for thier disobedience and rebellion against Him. If a person is experiencing chastening of any type, then he can rest assured God is dealing with him as one of His children. All of Gods children experience chastening in one form or another. Notice that God does not chasten all of mankind. There will always be those who are bastards, or rather, those who are not legitimate children. If a person is born again, or born anew, they are adopted as children of God. No one can be born again, and not be a child of God. Therefore, we cannot look at them as “born out of wedlock”, however it could be referring the slang meaning of “disagreeable”. Considering other realted passages, it seems best that this is describing them as being illegitimate, meaning they do not conform to a particular standard, are not of a particular type, or simply not justified. Considering all three of these meanings we arrive at the conclusion that they are not conformed to the image of His Son, they are not of the adopted type, they are not justified. Now, having defined those who are bastards, let’s take a closer look at those who are children. In these passages from Hebrews, we have determined two different types of punishment. Every child is scourged at some point, this does not necessarily mean all the time. However, all are partakers of some form of chastening, whether it be scourging or chastening. Whether it be afflication and calamity or punishment for training and conforming. I have spoken often in other studies of the two type of children, the obedient and disobedient, and again this passage suggests two deferring types. Those whom the Lord loves dearly, those who he finds to be pleasing, are the obedeint who are living righteously. Those who are scourged are those who are disobedient, still living in sin, and in conformance to the world. Discover the truth at www.BaptistCommentary.com

Hebrews 12:11
11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
Notice the ending statement of this passage, “unto them which are exercised thereby“. Previously, it was revealed that God only chastises those who are His adopted children. Now, notice that not all His children are excercised by His chastening, not all are affected and learn to be obedeint. Some will be afflicted and live in calamity thier entire lives on earth. Even more sadly, only a few are able to see the affliction and calamity that so many live in, because they see themsleves as being righteous, and have no need for a physician to heal them. Matthew 18:9
9And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.
I know at first this passage is easily mistaken to say something that it was not intended to say. Especially when you have been taught the wrong interpretation for a very long time. A person cannot determine his own eternal destination, that was determined by God the Father. Neither is our salvation a works based salvation being determined by what we do. To rightly divide this passage you must consider that anything not righteous is evil. Anything we do that is not righteous is sin, and we sin a lot in one day. According to the scriptures, everything that is not righteous is, or will eventually be, burned up. When we are chastened by God with fire, we are experincing the same fire that will consume all unrighteousness in the end. Just as the earnest of the inheritance is derived from the eternal inheritance, and is therefore the same, that is, eternal life and eternal salvation, so also is the fire that we are chastened with. It also is but an earnest while here in this world, being derived from the eternal flames of hell. When we walk contrary to God, we are committing evil, and that evil must be consumed with fire. When we walk contrary to God, He walks contrary to us, and therefore we are experiencing hell's fire in the present, being absent from Him. It is God's hope that we will realize this and turn to Him in obedience. The good news is that because Christ secured our eternal destination for us, when we depart this evil world, we will be changed into a glorious and holy form acceptable unto to God. Matthew 3:11
11“I baptize you withOr in water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
John makes reference to two possible outcomes for the children of God. If they believe and are obedient, they will receive the Holy Ghost as a reward, and with it the earnest of thier eternal inheritance, which is life and salvation in this present world. If however, they choose not to be obedient, they will be chastened with fire. Keep in mind that God only chastens His children because those not chastened are bastards. Romans 8:34
34Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died–more than that, who was raised to life–is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
