Matthew 5:38-42
An Eye for an Eye
38“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’Exodus 21:24; Lev. 24:20; Deut. 19:21 A defining mark of believers is an inner reality that bares itself in the actions of the believer. How do we know a person is saved, a follower of The Way? We know by the fruit he bares. He turns his check instead of retaliating against his enemy. Instead of wishing for their downfall and eventual judgment at the hand of God, he prays for their salvation, so that they too may rejoice with him in Heaven. Why would someone to whom grace has been extended desire the opposite for someone else? No, this is the mark of evil, of a hardened heart, not the heart of someone who has received the gift of eternal salvation. So Christ commands us to live lives of grace through our actions, by turning away from hateful vengeance and retaliation, by going the extra mile, and giving without thought of reward.
