James 4:4-5
4You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

The word friend I would define in this instance as “being fond of”. If we are fond of (love) the things and ways of this world, as corrupt as it is, than we are hostile towards God and considered His enemy. This is where we must be “hot” in the eyes of the Lord, lest we are spewed from His mouth.
Regarding being friends with non-Christians, I see this as no topic for debate. I can answer it simply by saying this: I would never have known the joy of the Lord if I were not befriended by a Christian. In my case, as in most others (I would surmise) God used one of His own to reach out and reclaim one that was lost.
Truly, if we do not extend grace and mercy to the lost, then we are not living as we ought, and Christ's example was in error. Christ came into this world to heal the sick – to do that he needed to befriend them.
