Psalms 42:11
11Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?Put your hope in God,for I will yet praise him,my Savior and my God.
11Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?Put your hope in God,for I will yet praise him,my Savior and my God.
The Psalmist ends on a high note. There is no reason to be sad – God is our hope. As a matter of fact the Psalmist says that when he has hope in God, he smiles! That should be the hallmark of every Christian – a great smile. And how do you get that? You only get one by drinking the Living Water, by looking to God and not the world when the hurts and tears come, and you ride the rapids of life to be more pure. Hope in God

Psalms 42:7
7Deep calls to deepin the roar of your waterfalls;all your waves and breakershave swept over me.
7Deep calls to deepin the roar of your waterfalls;all your waves and breakershave swept over me.
Movement is necessary to keep water fresh. The Psalmist compares his depression to billowing water. His says that his internal state can be compared to the chaos and noise of a waterfall. Think about how hard it is to hear someone when you are next to a roaring river. Sure it’s nice to paddle a canoe on a small calm pond, but navigating the rough rapids of a raging river is tough. However, with out movement water becomes stagnant. Fast moving water, water that is purified by constant pounding on rocks, is the freshest most satisfying water you can find. That’s just like life. If everything we always calm and never rough we would never grow, and our water would be stagnant. We need to chaos and the rapids every now and then to purify us and make us fresh. Movement is necessary to keep water fresh, and rapids are a necessary part of that movement.

Psalms 42:3-5
3My tears have been my foodday and night, while men say to me all day long,“Where is your God?”
3My tears have been my foodday and night, while men say to me all day long,“Where is your God?”
Water is a part of tears and tears are necessary to Life. The Psalmist is so cast down that he claims that his tears are his diet. Tears are necessary to cleanse the eyes. There are several kinds of tears: Tears of joy, Tears of sadness, Tears of embarrassment. When it comes to tears of sadness, tears are necessary because they are an outward sign of an inward hurt. Anyone can say that they are “o.k.” on the outside and there isn’t much you say about it of they insist, but if someone is crying you know for a fact that something is going on. The Psalmist even says that his tears mock him, asking “Where is his God?”. Here is the hope: Why should we be depressed? We have God! When we seek and find God’s face we no longer need to be sad! We know in Revelation that God will wipe all of our tears away! Water is a part of tears and tears are an outward sign of an inward hurt – without tears of sadness no one can help us because no one knows we are hurting.

Psalms 42:1-2
BOOK II
Psalms 42-72
Psalm 42
In many Hebrew manuscripts Psalms 42 and 43 constitute one psalm. For the director of music. A maskilTitle: Probably a literary or musical term of the Sons of Korah.
1As the deer pants for streams of water,so my soul pants for you, O God. Water is Necessary to Life. Humans are mostly water. Earth is mostly water. A planet must have liquid water to sustain complex life. If you are a hunter where is the best place to stake out for animals? At the local watering hole because all things need water to live – where there is water there is life.
The Psalmist longs for God just as we long for water. He can’t wait to get to the temple and worship. We are in a unique position with God because of Jesus – we can “drink” anytime and anywhere we like. Before you had to go to the temple to “truly” worship God. Jesus took that away when he died for us and now we can approach God anytime, and boldly.
Water is Necessary to Physical Life Just as “Living Water” (God) is necessary to Spiritual Life.
