The Ascension of Jesus 50When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.52Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.53And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.John The Word Became Flesh Chapter 1 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4In him was life, and that life was the light of all people.5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.6There was a man sent from God whose name was John.7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.12Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only ‘Son’, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”)16Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.18No one has ever seen God, but the one and only ‘Son’, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

In Spanish, I find it interesting that the word for Logos is "Verbo," like our word "verb," meaning an action word. An interesting take on Logos that has a different level of meaning from the English.

If we have the word of God in our heart, then he must be closer then we think.

"In the beginning" goes back to Genesis 1:1. It would be interesting to read the septuigent and see if the greek is exactly the same in Genesis and John. The creator God is the Word that has been incarnated. See Eugene Peterson's"Chirst Plays in Ten Thousand Places" for an elaboration on this theme.

The translation of the word "Word" here seems to be lacking. When looking at the original word used was Logos which was a richer word including a concept of philosophy. It might have been more accurately translated with the word philosophy, but that also seems to fall short. It seems to be a more divine philosophy given from god, all the teachings of the Old Testament and so much more. Logic, reason, principle, thought, poser of the universe, something of great power from God of God.

God existed before He created. Straightforward declaration of the deity of Jesus Christ. Jehovah Witnesses confuse this passage of scripture. Jesus, the Word, is God.

It took me forever to understand this. But I get it now! God is the word and the word is God, because he is the perfect example of all that it says. Everything written in it, from love to redemption was inspired by him and in the New Testament he becomes the fulfillment of the Old Testament.

the Word is Jesus and Jesus was in the beginning with God, there never was a time when Jesus wasn't and there never will be a time when Jesus won't be. ... In the beginning was Jesus, and Jesus was with God, and Jesus was God.
