Chapter 8 Life Through the Spirit 1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.3For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man,4in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.5Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so.8Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.9You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.10But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. 12Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation–but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it.13For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live,14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.17Now if we are children, then we are heirs–heirs of God and co–heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

sin is hostile to our God and our beliefs. It leads to death in full bloom. Love God and put him first in all you do. A life of peace and harmony is yours.

To set the mind on the flesh here does not mean to have bad theology or to be unversed in the latest Christian interests; rather, it means to not have the same mind as the Lord Jesus -- to be self-pleasing, ungracious, greedy, violent, nagging, and always at war with oneself and with others. To set the mind on the Spirit is something entirely different -- it is to continually strive to 'have this mind... which is yours in Christ Jesus..' (Phil. 2:5) -- which implies living a life of self-sacrifice and love in fellowship with other Christians to the glory of God. Therefore, we need to be daily refreshed by God's word, but we also need to remove the stumbling blocks in our own lives that cause us to keep from putting His Word into full practice. Doing things that cause us to be conflicted, pursuing hobbies that cause us to be consumed with the passing world rather than the enduring Kingdom -- in short, whatever draws us away from pure devotion to Christ -- must be avoided like the plague so that the Spirit will have free reign in our hearts, minds, and souls. Only in this way will we ever see real growth in holiness, which is simply pure-hearted, single-minded devotion to the Lord. Holiness is the source of real joy, life, and peace, because in the Spirit we are truly united with Christ -- free of the tangles and twists in our souls caused by a stubborn heart that is unyielding to the Lord.

Are you having trouble overcoming your flesh (the nature of man without the Holy Spirit), addictions & emotional issues? I have a few suggestions that will ensure your victory, from a Scriptural perspective:
1) Believe the Bible as God’s definite, unchanging & inspired word.
2) Don’t look to your own or other men’s reasoning (example: psychology), Proverbs 3:5-8 & 16:2-3.
3) Stay away from temptations by cutting them off & out of your lifestyle because you can, Matthew 5:27-30, Philippians 4:13 & Hebrews 12:1-3.
4) Exercise your body, it gives you a sense of well-being, 1 Timothy 4:8-9.
5) Read out loud & to yourself Scriptures every day, plus any other time you may need to throughout the day when you get weak in the spirit of your mind, 1 Timothy 4:15-16. (A list of suggested Scriptures is below, using the Amplified Bible translation that you can start with.)
6) Be accountable to a spiritual believer that the Lord has in your life (Parent, spouse, Pastor, friend, sibling), Galatians 6:1-9.
7) Put on the garment of Praise for the spirit of heaviness, Isaiah 61:3 (Read my notes in eBible.com on verse 3) & Ephesians 5:17-20.
8) Pray both in the Spirit and in your understanding constantly, 1 Corinthians 14:14-15, 17-18; Ephesians 6:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:14-24; Jude 20-21.
Bible translation: (The Amplified Bible)
