Chapter 8
Life Through the Spirit
1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,Some later manuscripts Jesus, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit,2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.3For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature,Or the flesh; also in verses 4, 5, 8, 9, 12 and 13 God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.Or man, for sin And so he condemned sin in sinful man,Or in the flesh4in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.
5Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
6The mind of sinful manOr mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;7the sinful mindOr the mind set on the flesh is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so.8Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

9You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.10But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

12Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation–but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it.13For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live,14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.Or adoption And by him we cry, “Abba,Aramaic for Father Father.”16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.17Now if we are children, then we are heirs–heirs of God and co–heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Isn't it true that repentance is really a reorienting of our mind and heart to that of the mind and heart of God? The guilt and condemnation that we experienced, which is indeed felt in every human conscience, has been finally cleared by the atoning sacrifice of Christ (cf Heb. 10:22). The Gospel, which had met in each of us a hard heart and a stubborn will that could not obey or submit to God, now through the Spirit's help has reached to the very depths of our soul as not only true but as an 'fragrance from life to life' (cf 2 Cor. 2:14-16) that we are insatiably drawn to by the amazing grace of God Almighty. What must we do from this point, then, except to continually strive to have the mind of Christ be magnified in our own minds? This certainly involves an active pursuit on our part to take captive our thoughts (cf 2 Cor. 10:3-6) AND to see to it that we are not being taken captive by lies and fruitless pursuits (cf Col. 2:8-15) that pull us away from the simplicity and power of the Gospel. [See also Rom. 12:1-2, Eph. 4:17-24, and Phil. 2:3-7!]

Are you having trouble overcoming your flesh (the nature of man without the Holy Spirit), addictions & emotional issues? I have a few suggestions that will ensure your victory, from a Scriptural perspective: 1) Believe the Bible as God’s definite, unchanging & inspired word. 2) Don’t look to your own or other men’s reasoning (example: psychology), Proverbs 3:5-8 & 16:2-3. 3) Stay away from temptations by cutting them off & out of your lifestyle because you can, Matthew 5:27-30, Philippians 4:13 & Hebrews 12:1-3. 4) Exercise your body, it gives you a sense of well-being, 1 Timothy 4:8-9. 5) Read out loud & to yourself Scriptures every day, plus any other time you may need to throughout the day when you get weak in the spirit of your mind, 1 Timothy 4:15-16. (A list of suggested Scriptures is below, using the Amplified Bible translation that you can start with.) 6) Be accountable to a spiritual believer that the Lord has in your life (Parent, spouse, Pastor, friend, sibling), Galatians 6:1-9. 7) Put on the garment of Praise for the spirit of heaviness, Isaiah 61:3 (Read my notes in eBible.com on verse 3) & Ephesians 5:17-20. 8) Pray both in the Spirit and in your understanding constantly, 1 Corinthians 14:14-15, 17-18; Ephesians 6:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:14-24; Jude 20-21. Bible translation: (The Amplified Bible) Matthew 5:27-30; Romans 8:1-8, 13; Romans 13:13-14; 1 Corinthians 6:18-20; 1 Corinthians 9:25-27; 1 Corinthians 10:6; 2 Corinthians 7:1; 2 Corinthians 10:3-6; Galatians 5:13,16-25; Galatians 6:7-9; Ephesians 4:20-24; Colossians 3:1-10; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8; James 1:19-22; Jude 20-21
