Future Glory 18I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.19The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.20For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope21that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.22We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.23Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.24For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? 25But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. 26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

Everyone has their calling. One of mine is technology. What the toymaker is to dismembered dolls is what I am to non-booting laptops. One of my first customers with an unresponsive laptop was none other than my Mom. As I began to prepare for surgery, Mom wanted to show me the problem again. Every time I made a keystroke, she wanted to type something else. I finally let go of the laptop and let her hold it. This brought forth an angry, “Why are you not fixing it?!” “Because you will not let go,” I replied. She finally let me hold the laptop, and a few keystrokes and a reboot later, all was well. As time went on, Mom slowly began to trust me with her technology related problems. Now, she almost gets excited when something goes wrong, because she loves to watch me work. Often times, before she can explain the problem I have resolved the issue. Now the part that everyone loves: the obvious lesson. Ever wonder why you are still wrestling with that same Goliath? Contemplating why you have yet to cross that Red Sea? Baffled about the slowness of God in getting you out of your fiery furnace? His reply to us is the same as mine to Mom, ‘Because you will not let go.’ God cannot remedy what we will not release. He cannot heal what we continue to hold. Let it go. Give it to Jesus. The bills. The sickness. The broken heart. The dead career. Let it go. The prerequisite to every miracle is a problem, so smile the smile of a non-internet-accessing Mom with a son who has a knack for networking. Take your hands off of the problem and watch how quickly God types a few commands and reboots your joy.

If we are impatient, it probably has something to do with what this verse implies -- godly patience (that is, a gracious and expectant waiting) comes to the one who puts his or her hope in things that cannot be lost, forgotten, faded, or possibly never even received. Much in this world will not last, and there are so many things that we are not even sure that we can ever obtain. Even if we do finally reach our goal or receive our prize, there is no ultimate fulfillment or peace to be had. The promises of God, however, are true and will be fulfilled; if we place our faith in the God of Promise and persistently ask Him for all that we need and desire, we can be assured of an answer. Since it may take long to receive an answer to our prayers, however, we need patience -- and will learn it from our seeking and waiting!
