Chapter 5 Peace and Joy 1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;4perseverance, character; and character, hope.5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.9Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him!10For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!11Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

We were utterly helpless when Christ came to die in our place. The passage explains that we have gone from a place of being utterly helpless to being righteous before the Father. We've been reconciled by the death of Christ and saved from wrath by His life. God's just wrath was satisfied through the death of His own Son.

Given that today’s Mother’s Day, I want to share a story about my mom: I remember the first and hopefully, only time I got into a car accident… I was 16 and breaking in my new driver’s license …my mom and I were parked outside the bank getting ready to leave. On this day, however, it was raining really hard…we’re talking a torrential downpour…. visibility was poor, the wind was blowing and the rain was crashing and I couldn’t see a thing. Rather than wait until I was certain that it was clear…I gunned the gas pedal and crashed into a Mercedes-Benz. It was totally… my fault. At that time, my life flashed before my eyes. Not because I crashed into a car…but, because I was afraid of what my father was going to do to me BECAUSE I crashed into the car
I imagined what my father was going to say to me when I got home…I imagined his angry face and even more angry posture…I imagined never making it to my 18th… I imagined my dad taking out his belt and whipping me good. Even though I was 16 years old, my dad had a deadly combination…he was Filipino, hard-core and old school…
On our way home, I was silent and afraid. I’ll never forget my mom telling me to stop the car. Then, she told me that we needed to switch places…that she’d take the driver’s seat and I was in the passenger seat. She told me that she knew how my dad was going to react when we got home and the kind of beating I was going to receive. She told me that my dad would never do that to her…so, she took my place and took the blame…sparing me from punishment. I’ll never forget that time, when my mom took my place so that I could be spared the pain and punishment.
What my mom did reminds me of a passage:
Romans 5:6-11
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Similarly, as with my mom’s example but in ways more infinitely greater than our minds and our hearts could comprehend…
Jesus…took our place…instead of our being rightfully judged for our sins, he, instead, chose to be judged in our place. But, since he’s without sin, we, too, will be considered as without sin. As a result, we should never doubt God’s grace and love for us…no matter what the circumstance.
As Christians, no matter what happens around us…we need to live lives of victory…confidence…assurance…joy…peace. Why? Because Jesus died and took our place. And, when he took our place, he removed our sin…our guilt…our embarrassment…. our pain…and our shame.
When God looks at us…he sees Jesus in our place. Some people think that this is a metaphor…but, we know that this to be a life-saving reality.
Why else would we endure hardship and sacrifice?
…why else would we fight Satan and sin?
…why else would we put our hope for today in the heaven of tomorrow?
…why else would we look forward to fellowship with God at the end of our lives…and look forward to our times with God in our day-to-day lives?
Why?
ð Because Jesus died for our sins… and set us free!
ð The question is: How do we live life today? Free or imprisoned?
Story: There was a Study of fish taken from the ocean. These fish were transplanted into a tank that replicated their living conditions as much as possible.
The only difference: the fish were encased in an aquarium that only allowed them to swim 10 feet in every direction. Initially, the fish, who were used to swimming without any boundaries, kept bumping into the aquarium walls. Eventually, they got used to their surroundings and learned to navigate through the waters 10 feet this way…10 feet that way…10 feet any-way!
After a few months of living in this walled in existence, they were set loose back into the ocean. The scientists observed that although they were set free and could swim any distance…they were only swam 10 feet this way…10 feet that way…10 feet any-way!
The fish…they didn’t know any better. They got so used to living a certain way…even when they were set free…they lived as if imprisoned in a cage.
As Christians, when we forget Jesus’s sacrifice…we could be the same way. As we break the bread and drink of the fruit of the vine… remember what God, through his son Jesus, has done for us…and live a life this week, that shows our freedom through Christ.
