1God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.

2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

3though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
Selah

4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.

5God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.

6Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

8Come and see the works of the LORD,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.

9He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shieldsOr chariots with fire.

10“Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

11The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

NIV - "Be still, and know that I am God." NASB - "Cease striving...". Striving - 1) to devote serious effort or energy; 2) to struggle in opposition. How can I know God when I am spending all my energy, focus and attention elsewhere or I am constantly wrestling with him over the decisions in my life? My life is filled with so much noise and junk, there's no room for God. I need to be still, be silent.

Be still and Know that I am God tells me that I need to be still when things are going crazy around me. That is the only way that I will be able to listen to what God has to say to me when He wants to tell me something, or watch what He is going to do next.

While Grandfather was still on earth, he allowed me to fight beside him. We won wars against cars that would not start, grass that refused to stay down, and pictures that had to be hung on walls. As great as those times were, there were also times he gave the one command that is hard for all 8 year old boys to obey, ‘Be still.’ Talk about a challenge. One time in particular, I was in the backyard playing too close to a beehive. The bees did not take too kindly to the big headed yellow boy invading their privacy, so they decided to send a general out to take care of their lightweight. He stung me where it hurt: right in the eye. All I remember is the pain of a hammer on my head, yelling ‘Granddaddy!’, and falling on the ground. Before I knew it, Granddaddy appeared out of nowhere and stomped the bee into the dirt...probably about 2 inches above hell itself. As he picked me up in his arm and carried me to the house, I heard those two words again. Be still. But Granddaddy, I can’t see! Be still. But Granddaddy, it hurts so badly! Be still. I’m scared, Daddy! Be still. The same hands that once carried me now cradled me. He removed the stinger and then took a napkin with tobacco inside and placed it on my eye. The invisible hammer that was banging my head fell limp beside his feet. The violet sea of confusion rested into a lake of peace. The pain went away. No more yelling. No more crying. Just the only man who has been my father and me were left. What Granddaddy is to bee stings, God is to life. There are times when He says ‘be still, and know that I am God.’ It is an honor to fight alongside our God, but it is a privilege to stand still and watch the Mighty Hand of God work on our behalf. Do you feel as if you’re stuck? Nowhere to go? All you can do is wait? Lift those bowed down heads and erect drooping shoulders. Be still. He’s God. Watch and see.

During a intense trial or difficulty of life, and having prayed in earnest, God says, "be still and know I am God". It is now in His hands and we are not to take it back but wait in peace knowing His timing is perfect to intervene and to work it out perfectly for all concerned.

What is before you? is it the red sea as was with Moses? or Goliath before David? Look back, recollect your mind and remember the mighty works of the Lord. Surely He can not fail you on this one.
