Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

1The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,

3he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.

4Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,Or through the darkest valley
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

5You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

6Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.

Nelson's says the rod and staff-- which I once associated with beatings and wondered how they could comfort--were actually used to rescue, protect, and guide the sheep. And maybe a beating every now and then. JK.

Thy rod and thy staff comfort me means thy spirit and thy word. rod is used in the bible to potray correction or guidance(beating) as in a shephard.This is the work of the spirit-making sure we walk according to the word beating us into the shape God sees us. Staff which is a symbol of power and authority is what aaron used to perform miracles.In the old testament,the staff was where the hebrews will write all God has spoken to them in the form of inscriptions.It became thier Bible.
