Proverbs Chapter 1 Prologue: Purpose and Theme 1The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:2for attaining wisdom and discipline; 3for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, 4for giving prudence to the simple, 5let the wise listen and add to their learning, 6for understanding proverbs and parables, 7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom Warning Against Enticement 8Listen, my son, to your father's instructionand do not forsake your mother's teaching. 9They will be a garland to grace your head 10My son, if sinners entice you, let's lie in wait for someone's blood, let's waylay some harmless soul; 12let's swallow them alive, like the grave,Hebrew Sheol 13we will get all sorts of valuable things 14throw in your lot with us, 15my son, do not go along with them, 16for their feet rush into sin, 17How useless to spread a net 18These men lie in wait for their own blood; 19Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; |
