Psalms 127:1-2

study / save / / memorize

Psalm 127
A song of ascents. Of Solomon.
1Unless the LORD builds the house,
its builders labor in vain.
Unless the LORD watches over the city,
the watchmen stand guard in vain.

2In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep toOr eat— / for while they sleep he provides for those he loves.

3Sons are a heritage from the LORD,
children a reward from him.

4Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are sons born in one's youth.

5Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

Bonhoeffer refers to this verse in his book Life Together. An important concept to glean from this passage is the nature of the work we are engaging in, and the foundation upon which that work is built. In reference to another bookmark found in Mark 1:35 regarding spiritual discipline, one must ensure that the rising early, and other actions we consider important, is ultimately rooted in the work of the chief cornerstone Christ. Otherwise, all our work, as the verse says, is for naught.
