Jude 1:21

play chapter / study / save / / memorize

A call to persevere
17But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold.18They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.”19These are the men who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.

20But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.

21Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.
22Be merciful to those who doubt;23snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear–hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

I'm not sure if Jude was meaning God's love toward us, or our love of God. He may possibly have meant both. However, our love of God seems to me to be more proactive in seeking His face. While we did not show love towards Him, He still loved us. Truly, keeping ourselves in that love for our Creator feeds our eagerness to be with Him. To do this, we need to keep our eyes off of ourselves – off of our seemingly major issues, which in the perspective of Him, are really nothing – and keep our eyes focused keenly on our Saviour; praying without ceasing and looking forward to His mercy as He comes for us.

20-21. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves. This is now the positive exhortation of the letter. The main imperative verb is Keep yourselves in the love of God. Keep (Gr teµreoµ) means “guard” or “reserve,” and its object is yourselves. The meaning here seems to be “keep yourselves from being dragged off into a life that is different from what God wants for you.” The love of God may be objective genitive, meaning the true worship of God; again compare Deuteronomy 13:3; “… for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” The main exhortation to keep yourselves in the love of God is supplemented with three circumstantial participles of means in the original; they answer the question, “How does one keep himself in the love of God?” By building up yourselves in the faith, which means learning more about the faith, or growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord and Saviour. He adds, by praying in the Holy Spirit, which may be simply worshiping God as led by the Holy Spirit rather than listening to these false prophets who do not have the Spirit at all (vs. 19). And, thirdly, keep yourselves by looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Looking for (Gr prosdechomai) means to “anticipate.” What is meant here is probably the same exhortation as was given by Paul when he used this very word in a similar connection in Titus 2:13, “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.” It is interesting that Paul also used the word mercy in a reference to the Second Coming, “The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy … in that day” (II Tim 1:18). Peter also closed his second epistle with a triple use of a synonym, asking his readers to look for the coming of the Day of God.

Are you having trouble overcoming your flesh (the nature of man without the Holy Spirit), addictions & emotional issues? I have a few suggestions that will ensure your victory, from a Scriptural perspective: 1) Believe the Bible as God’s definite, unchanging & inspired word. 2) Don’t look to your own or other men’s reasoning (example: psychology), Proverbs 3:5-8 & 16:2-3. 3) Stay away from temptations by cutting them off & out of your lifestyle because you can, Matthew 5:27-30, Philippians 4:13 & Hebrews 12:1-3. 4) Exercise your body, it gives you a sense of well-being, 1 Timothy 4:8-9. 5) Read out loud & to yourself Scriptures every day, plus any other time you may need to throughout the day when you get weak in the spirit of your mind, 1 Timothy 4:15-16. (A list of suggested Scriptures is below, using the Amplified Bible translation that you can start with.) 6) Be accountable to a spiritual believer that the Lord has in your life (Parent, spouse, Pastor, friend, sibling), Galatians 6:1-9. 7) Put on the garment of Praise for the spirit of heaviness, Isaiah 61:3 (Read my notes in eBible.com on verse 3) & Ephesians 5:17-20. 8) Pray both in the Spirit and in your understanding constantly, 1 Corinthians 14:14-15, 17-18; Ephesians 6:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:14-24; Jude 20-21. Bible translation: (The Amplified Bible) Matthew 5:27-30; Romans 8:1-8, 13; Romans 13:13-14; 1 Corinthians 6:18-20; 1 Corinthians 9:25-27; 1 Corinthians 10:6; 2 Corinthians 7:1; 2 Corinthians 10:3-6; Galatians 5:13,16-25; Galatians 6:7-9; Ephesians 4:20-24; Colossians 3:1-10; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8; James 1:19-22; Jude 20-21
