John
Chapter 1
The Word Became Flesh
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2He was with God in the beginning.

3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understoodOr darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.Or This was the true light that gives light to every man who comes into the world

10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God–13children born not of natural descent,Greek of bloods nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only,Or the Only Begotten who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only,Or the Only Begotten,Some manuscripts but the only (or only begotten) Son who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

Receiving also involves the will. Receiving is also a definite act! You can believe in God but you also receive Him!...notice that the words "received" and "believed" are used interchangeably in this verse. The one who believes in Jesus Christ is the one who receives Him as Saviour. If he does not realize his sinful condition and therefore, does not receive Jesus Christ as his Saviour, the person, does not believe as Scripture defines belief. Notice in verse 13, that salvation does not come through the will of the flesh! example:"the golden rule", religious activity, membership.

But to all those who accepted His authority and position as the Christ, He extended the liberty of becoming sons of God, especially to them that place thier faith in His power and authority as the Son of God: Which were made children, not by the offering of sacrifice, nor by the inclination of the human nature, nor by the choice of moral excellence, but of God. -- John teaches that to "ALL" those who were able to accept His position as the Christ, and especially to those who believed, to both of these groups, "Which were born of God", He extended the liberty of becoming "sons". The Greek word translated "sons" is "the name transferred to that intimate and reciprocal relationship formed between men by the bonds of love, friendship, trust, just as between parents and children". 1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us. Because He first loved us, and bestowed this love upon us by grace, we are first made children by adoption at regeneration. Then if we love Him in return, putting our faith in this glorious and wonderful good news, converting from our worldly ways, we complete the circle of the reciprocal relationship. Take note that "even to them that believe" is present tense as occurring in actual time and the phrase "Which were born" is Aorist which is generally rendered as past tense. Therefore, they could not believe and then afterward be born of God. This is further proven true given the fact that Jesus extended this liberty only to those who "where" already adopted as children, referring to both groups of people, those who had not yet believed, and especially to those who did believe. Jesus had knowledge of those born again unlike men, even if they have the ability to "see" spiritual things.
