Chapter 2 The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost 1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God–fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.7Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?8Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome11(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs–we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”12Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” 13Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

Reversing Babel
Genesis 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is ONE, and they have all ONE language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
The key to accomplishing great things is to become ONE. ECHAD (Strong’s #259) is the Hebrew word here in Genesis 11 translated ONE. HEIS (#1520) is the corresponding Greek word. It means to be unified, to have it all together, to have one’s priorities settled and in agreement, and to be all heading in the same direction. There is power in this state of being.
Natural man is an amazing being. The power and potential lying within our soul has seemingly limitless possibilities. In fact the LORD recorded above that “now nothing will be restrained (inaccessible, fenced off, limited) from them”. Curiously, the last part of this verse is displayed boldly in the lobby at the Huntsville, Alabama operations of NASA. Indeed our human imagination (thoughts, purposes, plotting) has led to many wonderful achievements and also many tragic disasters. Mankind has been to the moon, conquered diseases and produced crops which could feed the world. Conversely, we also have made devices which could destroy the earth and we do not live in peace and harmony with one another. The LORD knows, that left to our own imagination and devices we will destroy ourselves.
Just a few generations after the Flood, humanity went back to focusing on themselves and what they could accomplish in and for themselves. They determined to build for themselves a city (kingdom). In the city they would build a tower whose top (head) would reach to heaven. And in this project they would make a name for themselves.
Much could and has been said of the adamic nature and the sin of aspiring to be “as God”. How manifestly it is illustrated here in Genesis 11. God saw the heart of men and the danger they represented to themselves. Note that God is never threatened by our schemes and actions. Nor do those of the enemy intimidate Him. Rather it is the harm we may do to ourselves, and His creation, that moves God to merciful judgment. Babel was an anointing of confusion that God sent to save humanity from another “Flood” judgment.
It is, however, God’s purpose to bring us all as ONE in Him (John 17). And the LORD Jesus accomplished this in the cross (Ephesians 2:13-15). The power of this began to be demonstrated on the day of Pentecost following His resurrection and ascension (Acts 2). It will be culminated when He is all in all (1Corinthians 15:28). He is bringing us to ONE language (Zephaniah 3:9), ONE speech (1Corinthians 1:10), and ONE name (Isaiah 62:2; Acts 4:12; Philippians 2:9-11; Revelation 3:12; 14:1).
John 17:21-23 That they all may be ONE; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be ONE in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be ONE, even as we are ONE: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in ONE; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
