An Eye for an Eye
38“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’Exodus 21:24; Lev. 24:20; Deut. 19:2139But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.40And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.41If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

The marker of the believer an inner reality that bares itself in the actions of said believer. How do we know a person is saved, a Christian and follower of The Way? We know by the fruit he bares. He turns his check instead of retaliating against his enemy. Instead of wishing for their downfall and eventual judgment at the hand of God, he prays for their salvation, so that they too may rejoice with him in Heaven. Why would someone to whom grace has been extended desire the opposite for someone else? No, this is the mark of evil, of a hardened heart, not the heart of someone who has received the gift of eternal salvation. So Christ commands us to live lives of grace through our actions, by turning away from hateful vengeance and retaliation, by going the extra mile, and giving without thought of reward.
