The Temple Tax
24After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two–drachma tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn't your teacher pay the temple taxGreek the two drachmas?”

25“Yes, he does,” he replied.
When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes–from their own sons or from others?”

26“From others,” Peter answered.
“Then the sons are exempt,” Jesus said to him.
27“But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four–drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”

Jesus did not have to pay the tax but He did not want the people to be offended because He being a Jew, did not support the temple ministry. While Jesus did not hestiate to break the man-made traditions of the Pharisees, He was careful to obey the Law of God. This is the only miracle using one fish! And it is the only miracle which does not have the results recorded. Peter was probably accustomed to using a net in his hand, not a hook and line! But it was when Peter caught the fish that he found the money! If we were catching more fish and building more churches, we would find God supplying the money!
