Chapter 12
God Disciplines His Sons
1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

4In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.5And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons:
“My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,

6because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.”Prov. 3:11,12

7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?8If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live!10Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

12Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.13“Make level paths for your feet,”Prov. 4:26 so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

Hebrews 12:1 begins with “Therefore since we also are surrounded with so great a cloud of witnesses”, so we can surmise that he is referring to those that the apostle mentioned in chapter 11, including those that have gone before us in faith; Abel, Enoch, Noah, Moses, etc. We read in chapter 11 of all the mighty men of faith that lived out there lives unto God, overcoming huge obstacles because of their faith. These stories are provided here as an encouragement for us to live out our lives with faith and patience, looking to Christ as our example of faith lived out perfectly.

Are you having trouble overcoming your flesh (the nature of man without the Holy Spirit), addictions & emotional issues? I have a few suggestions that will ensure your victory, from a Scriptural perspective: 1) Believe the Bible as God’s definite, unchanging & inspired word. 2) Don’t look to your own or other men’s reasoning (example: psychology), Proverbs 3:5-8 & 16:2-3. 3) Stay away from temptations by cutting them off & out of your lifestyle because you can, Matthew 5:27-30, Philippians 4:13 & Hebrews 12:1-3. 4) Exercise your body, it gives you a sense of well-being, 1 Timothy 4:8-9. 5) Read out loud & to yourself Scriptures every day, plus any other time you may need to throughout the day when you get weak in the spirit of your mind, 1 Timothy 4:15-16. (A list of suggested Scriptures is below, using the Amplified Bible translation that you can start with.) 6) Be accountable to a spiritual believer that the Lord has in your life (Parent, spouse, Pastor, friend, sibling), Galatians 6:1-9. 7) Put on the garment of Praise for the spirit of heaviness, Isaiah 61:3 (Read my notes in eBible.com on verse 3) & Ephesians 5:17-20. 8) Pray both in the Spirit and in your understanding constantly, 1 Corinthians 14:14-15, 17-18; Ephesians 6:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:14-24; Jude 20-21. Bible translation: (The Amplified Bible) Matthew 5:27-30; Romans 8:1-8, 13; Romans 13:13-14; 1 Corinthians 6:18-20; 1 Corinthians 9:25-27; 1 Corinthians 10:6; 2 Corinthians 7:1; 2 Corinthians 10:3-6; Galatians 5:13,16-25; Galatians 6:7-9; Ephesians 4:20-24; Colossians 3:1-10; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8; James 1:19-22; Jude 20-21

Righteousness exhorts a nature but sin is a reproach.
