12So then, brothers,Or brothers and sisters; also verse 29 we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.13For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sonsSee discussion on &ldblquot;sons&rdblquot; in the preface of God.15For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

16The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

17and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Even when our hearts are broken because of sin or suffering, the Spirit is working in us a knowledge of the God of Love that has claimed us as His own. Though we may at times hardly believe that we are forgiven, God is greater than our heart and the Spirit is interceding for us (see v.27; also 1 John 3:19-20). The deeper and deeper the love of God sinks into our hearts, though, the greater joy and assurance we will have before God as we grow into the fullness of our salvation (1 John 3:21, Ephesians 3:14-20).
