Chapter 4
Living to Please God
1Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.2For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
3It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
4that each of you should learn to control his own bodyOr learn to live with his own wife; or learn to acquire a wife in a way that is holy and honorable,5not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;6and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.8Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

9Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.10And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.

11Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you,12so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

Your sanctification (o agiasmoß umwn). Found only in the Greek Bible and ecclesiastical writers from agiazw and both to take the place of the old words agizw, agismoß with their technical ideas of consecration to a god or goddess that did not include holiness in life. So Paul makes a sharp and pointed stand here for the Christian idea of sanctification as being "the will of God" (apposition) and as further explained by the epexegetic infinitive that ye abstain from fornication (apecesqai umaß apo thß porneiaß). Pagan religion did not demand sexual purity of its devotees, the gods and goddesses being grossly immoral. Priestesses were in the temples for the service of the men who came. The Word of God IS His will for us. "Sanctification" means the state of grace as a result of Christian commitment after baptism or conversion. (Merrian-Webster dictionary)

Are you having trouble overcoming your flesh (the nature of man without the Holy Spirit), addictions & emotional issues? I have a few suggestions that will ensure your victory, from a Scriptural perspective: 1) Believe the Bible as God’s definite, unchanging & inspired word. 2) Don’t look to your own or other men’s reasoning (example: psychology), Proverbs 3:5-8 & 16:2-3. 3) Stay away from temptations by cutting them off & out of your lifestyle because you can, Matthew 5:27-30, Philippians 4:13 & Hebrews 12:1-3. 4) Exercise your body, it gives you a sense of well-being, 1 Timothy 4:8-9. 5) Read out loud & to yourself Scriptures every day, plus any other time you may need to throughout the day when you get weak in the spirit of your mind, 1 Timothy 4:15-16. (A list of suggested Scriptures is below, using the Amplified Bible translation that you can start with.) 6) Be accountable to a spiritual believer that the Lord has in your life (Parent, spouse, Pastor, friend, sibling), Galatians 6:1-9. 7) Put on the garment of Praise for the spirit of heaviness, Isaiah 61:3 (Read my notes in eBible.com on verse 3) & Ephesians 5:17-20. 8) Pray both in the Spirit and in your understanding constantly, 1 Corinthians 14:14-15, 17-18; Ephesians 6:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:14-24; Jude 20-21. Bible translation: (The Amplified Bible) Matthew 5:27-30; Romans 8:1-8, 13; Romans 13:13-14; 1 Corinthians 6:18-20; 1 Corinthians 9:25-27; 1 Corinthians 10:6; 2 Corinthians 7:1; 2 Corinthians 10:3-6; Galatians 5:13,16-25; Galatians 6:7-9; Ephesians 4:20-24; Colossians 3:1-10; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8; James 1:19-22; Jude 20-21

There's no greater evidence in our commitment to doing God's will than what we do with our body. So much of what we do is because of "what I want" or "what makes me feel good". I'm sure God is asking, "What about me?"
