Walking in the light
5This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from allOr every sin.

8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

Chapter 2
1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense–Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.2He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also forOr He is the one who turns aside God's wrath, taking away our sins, and not only ours but also the sins of the whole world.

3We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.4The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.5But if anyone obeys his word, God's loveOr word, love for God is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:6Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

7Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.8Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

9Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.10Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in himOr it to make him stumble.11But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.

12I write to you, dear children,
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.

13I write to you, fathers,
because you have known him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.
I write to you, dear children,
because you have known the Father.

14I write to you, fathers,
because you have known him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the word of God lives in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.

We all sin. We all sin often. In order to continue a relationship with the Father, we are continually in need of correction and pardon. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9 MKJV) We beat ourselves up over our sin. We sin and seek forgiveness. Then, after God has forgiven us, we personally dredge the guilt of them back up; when the truth of it is – He is faithful and just to forgive us! When He forgives, He cleanses us from all that keeps us from Him – from all unrighteousness. Then we have communion with Him again. And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness - By forgiving all that is past, treating us as if we were righteous, and ultimately by removing all the stains of guilt from the soul. Don't get beat up with false guilt. Our sin is covered by the precious blood of Jesus. God wants us to acknowledge this.

Even though there is some sense of unworthiness and guilt in coming to God with my sins, there is gladness in that He keeps to His word and forgives me no matter what - for He loves me.

A friend of mine quotes this verse to everyone, so that they can understand that God loves them as long as they hold to His trust and confess their wrongs with an open heart.

GOD FORGIVES US WHEN WE SIN. HE WILL ONLY FORGIVE US IF WE HAVE CONFESSED THEM. GOD IS CARING AND JUST TOO. HE DOESNT SHOW FAVORITISM AND DOESNT ONLY FORGIVE THOSE WHO HAVE DONE ONLY MINOR THINGS, HE FORGIVES EVERYONE. HENCE, HE IS JUST AND FAITHFUL. HE CLEANSES US TOO. FROM all UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.

Confessions of sins is the path to God's saving grace. He will erase my past sins if I sincerely confess and admit my faults to Him and to my peers

Confession is a very difficult part, especially public confession. True acknowledgement of our sin opens the door for Christ's work to have meaning. He died for us, that we would not die for our shortcomings! He is a Faithful, Righteous Judge and His work is cleansing and healing! Thankyou Lord!

We can be deservedly hard on ourselves, so what an amazing gift - that we also can be forgiven and know the forgiveness of our God. This verse points us to the important part of the process that includes acknowledging that part of our behavior that "misses the mark." We don't sweep it under the rug or hide it in our secrecy closet. We roll it out, so that it can be forgiven and dealt with appropriately.

the beauty of this truth is that our confession is the key to forgiveness. Jesus's blood can only cleanse if we come to Him in faith by sincere repentance. there is no mercy for him who does not think he needs it.

All sin was paid for and put away on the basis of the satisfaction of the total debt that mankind owed for his sin. This sin debt was paid on the Cross of Calvary. We receive the benefits of the sacrificial death of Christ through Faith in that Finished Work.

to confess is to admit. as soon after your sin as you can you need to thank God for already have forgiven you of that sin and ask for the strength, wisdom and courage to resist the devil's temptations to be able to resist those temptations and not to let them to become your future sins. this does not give us the right to sin, but the assurance that if we confess, admit, to our sins, they WILL be forgiven.
