The Living Stone and a Chosen People
4As you come to him, the living Stone–rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him–5you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.6For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”Isaiah 28:16

7Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,
“The stone the builders rejected
has become the capstone,Or cornerstonePsalm 118:22

8and,
“A stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”Isaiah 8:14
They stumble because they disobey the message–which is also what they were destined for.

9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
10Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

11Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.12Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

One major truth that I find here is; with one small yet monumental decision, that of accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, everything about our eternity changes. And that should have a noticeable impact on our “here and now”. What used to be considered privilege to the Jew is offered to the Gentile. One decision, and we are partakers of His divine nature; heirs of the salvation of God. With that single decision comes the incredible privilege and responsibility of subjecting ourselves to the duties of a Christian – that of telling of His praises to the lost, just as we had heard from another's faithfulness and responded.

Taken from Matthew Henrys Commentary. "the Christian church had no such glorious temple, nor such a numerous priesthood; but its dispensation was mean, the services and sacrifices of it having nothing of the pomp and grandeur which the Jewish dispensation had. To this the apostle answers that the Christian church is a much nobler fabric than the Jewish temple; it is a living temple, consisting not of dead materials, but of living parts. Christ, the foundation, is a living stone. Christians are lively stones, and these make a spiritual house, and they are a holy priesthood; and, though they have no bloody sacrifices of beasts to offer, yet they have much better and more acceptable, and they have an altar too on which to present their offerings; for they offer spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ." xxxxxxx "The spiritual sacrifices which Christians are to offer are their bodies, souls, affections, prayers, praises, alms, and other duties. The most spiritual sacrifices of the best men are not acceptable to God, but through Jesus Christ; he is the only great high priest, through whom we and our services can be accepted;" xxxxxx "they are effectually called out of darkness into a state of marvellous light, joy, pleasure, and prosperity, with this intent and view, that they should show forth, by words and actions, the virtues and praises of him who hath called them."

John Calvin comments: “If ye keep my covenant, ye shall be to me a peculiar treasure beyond all other nations.” (Exodus 19:5.) There is in the royal priesthood a striking inversion of the words of Moses; for he says, “a priestly kingdom,” but the same thing is meant. So what Peter intimated was this, “Moses called your fathers a sacred kingdom, because the whole people enjoyed as it were a royal liberty, and from their body were chosen the priests; both dignities were therefore joined together: but now ye are royal priests, and, indeed, in a more excellent way, because ye are, each of you, consecrated in Christ, that ye may be the associates of his kingdom, and partakers of his priesthood. Though, then, the fathers had something like to what you have; yet ye far excel them. For after the wall of partition has been pulled down by Christ, we are now gathered from every nation, and the Lord bestows these high titles on all whom he makes his people.”
